Girl Guides of Canada, BC Council is monitoring the wildfire situation closely and are in contact with the Area Commissioners of Rivers North, Thompson Nicola and Monashee Areas who are keeping us apprised of the situation in affected communities in their areas. We will support these Guiding communities as necessary. We have asked specifically about SOAR participants, to prepare to assist them if required. We recognize that individuals and families in the affected communities will make the best decisions for themselves at this time. Please work with your patrol Guiders, Area SOAR Liaisons or District Commissioners and keep them informed of your circumstances. They will then pass information to the relevant contacts.
SOAR is still a go – the northwest part of the province is not experiencing the same fire situation as the Central Interior/Cariboo. We are monitoring the situation, and the SOAR team is in regular contact with local emergency management personnel and we will follow their direction. The safety of all participants is our key consideration.
For BC members who are travelling to SOAR by ground (bus or van), parents should direct any questions they may have to their patrol Guiders who will connect with their Area SOAR Liaisons, who have the most up-to-date information regarding transportation. Equipment vehicles and core staff need to be aware of the situation and use DriveBC (www.DriveBC.ca) for the latest information on highway conditions.
Should anything change, or we become aware of details that affect SOAR participants, we will communicate these updates as soon as we become aware of them.
